Reflections on My First Year
at DARTS:

Lessons in Impact, Connection, and Community

Joining DARTS

As I wrap up my first year at DARTS, I find myself reflecting on the journey so far. When I first joined, I knew I wanted to be part of something meaningful, but I didn’t realize how deeply this experience would shape me—both personally and professionally.

Freshly graduated from college, I was on the hunt for a job in 2024. When I came across DARTS, their values immediately resonated with me. I saw an opportunity to contribute to a cause that strengthens community ties and provides support to people who truly need it. That was a purpose I could get behind wholeheartedly.

Reflecting on Memorable Connections

Over the past year, there have been countless moments that have stayed with me. One of the most memorable moments for me was volunteering for the Breathing Space. Seeing the happy faces of all the Friends (what we call program participants) and volunteers being there made the whole experience worthwhile. I got to see how meaningful it was for the Friends to have quality time with one another; from playing games to singing with one another. The Breathing Space is a great opportunity to connect with an older adult and make an impact. I most definitely felt that I made a difference in a Friend’s day by volunteering.

Another memorable connection I had was connecting with one of our volunteers, Harry. Harry is a volunteer for DARTS though our Learning Buddies Program. I remember my first meeting with him so clearly. It was amazing to hear about the work Harry does for older adults in the LGBTQ+ community. I learned a lot from Harry about the struggle LGBTQ+ older adults experience, and the work that he does to help to help them. A lot of older adults in the community just need a place where they can spend time together. Harry has continued to do amazing work for many different communities.

Lessons in Impact

2024 taught me a lot about making an impact in the community and being a part of an organization that cares about its people. Being a part of the DEIAB committee, I learned how to make an impact in the work that I do every day to better DARTS and the community that we serve. DEIAB will always be ongoing work, and I strive to learn and better myself continuously. I am happy to be a part of a group of individuals that are passionate about DEIAB work at DARTS.

On a personal level, I’ve gained a deeper appreciation for the value of connection. In a world that often feels disconnected, the work we do at DARTS reminds me that community is not just important—it’s essential.

Looking Ahead

As I step into my second year, I’m excited to continue to make a difference in the community. I’m eager to explore new ways to expand our reach and impact, whether through new responsibility or strengthening partnerships within the community. Most of all, I’m committed to carrying forward the lessons I’ve learned this year—lessons in impact, connection, and community.

To anyone considering getting involved with DARTS—as a volunteer, donor, or partner—I can say with confidence that your contribution will make a meaningful difference. And to my colleagues, clients, and everyone I’ve met along the way, thank you for making my first year at DARTS so unforgettable.
